Debt Records

Music players, video clips and even a radio show for a record label's site

The Client

Debt Records is an independent record label based in Manchester. We’ve previously designed sites for two of their artists, so we were delighted when they entrusted us with the important task of redesigning and rebuilding the label’s own web presence. They had two main goals for their new online hub. First, their artist roster and many other projects (including a weekly radio show and a series of filmed recording sessions) needed a stylish, multimedia presentation that would help convey the label’s ethos. And second, behind the scenes, the site’s infrastructure had to be immensely user-friendly so the small team could quickly and easily make updates.

Record labels are supposed to know a thing or two about technology; we’re supposed to be able to cram art into science and project it at people in the most efficient way possible. But for years Debt Records was hampered by an old-fashioned website very much rooted in the last decade. It ‘did the job’, but it wasn’t exactly the most inspiring thing ever, and hardly stirred people’s confidence in us as a company that might know a thing or two about creativity. Well, Pilcrow + Pixel came to the rescue, designing a beautiful and functional site that works brilliantly on every device and contains all the things you’d want from a record label website, presented in an easily navigable and classy way. We couldn’t be happier with it.

The Project

With some wonderful photographs of the label’s bands and performers available to us, we’ve designed a site that’s full of large images – from the full-width portfolio that greets visitors arriving on the homepage to the portraits that sit at the top of every artist page. Visually, the aim is to make the site feel light and spacious with plenty of entertainment on offer – bursting with videos to watch and music to listen to – rather than text-heavy and cluttered.

When the Debt Records team log in to create new content, write blog posts, add the latest episode of their radio show or upload new videos, they’re presented with a streamlined interface that uses custom fields and inline instructions (created via the Advanced Custom Fields plugin) for each of the different page types. Set up in this way, maintaining the website is a simple, straightforward job that won’t take excessive time, thus leaving the team free to concentrate on all the other important tasks involved in running their record label.
