Ben Street

An elegantly minimalist site for a freelance art writer

The Client

Ben Street is a freelance art historian, lecturer and writer based in London. He’s lectured at museums and institutions such as the National Gallery, Tate and the Royal Academy of Arts and written articles for many publications. He approached Pilcrow + Pixel seeking a complete redesign, rebuild and reorganisation of a site he’d had for a few years, which was becoming rather unwieldy for readers to explore and for Ben to update with ease.

I was in need of a revamped site as a freelance lecturer and writer. P+P were fantastic all the way through the process – from understanding my specific requirements, interpreting my layman’s description of what the site should do, to coming up with excellent functionality and design. Throughout, they responded promptly to my many queries and were friendly, helpful and really understood what I was after. I’m delighted with my new site, which is the ideal extension of my work and has already proved useful in bringing me new clients. I would highly recommend working with Pilcrow + Pixel!

The Project

At the start of the project, we discussed with Ben the ways in which he was seeking to reorganise his site, as it contains a wealth of articles reaching back over a number of years. After a thorough content audit and agreement on a revised site structure, the previous long list of categories and subjects was slimmed down to a handful of overarching themes that, coupled with masonry-style index pages, allow readers to easily browse articles at a glance.

Ben expressed a desire for his new site to have an extremely clean and elegantly minimalist design that encourages readers to focus on the content without distractions. Since this echoes our own preference for minimalism, we were more than happy to oblige. The site includes lots of whitespace, with line lengths kept to a very readable span and images – frequently of the art being discussed – placed throughout each article at larger than average sizes.

As with the majority of Pilcrow + Pixel projects, Ben’s site features a highly customised WordPress interface – developed in Advanced Custom Fields – that enables him to easily create articles featuring inline galleries with lightboxes, sets of external or internal related links, video embeds and much more, but all without needing to add or edit a single line of code in the content editor.

Service and Support

Via our Website Care Plan, we are providing our web consultancy expertise, support and maintenance for Ben’s site. Additionally, benstreet.co.uk is hosted on Pilcrow + Pixel’s servers.
